Happy Christmas Eve! Today and tomorrow are filled with so many memorable family traditions. Every Christmas Eve around lunchtime we make our way to my grandmother’s house to celebrate with a huge traditional Cuban dinner. I get to see aunts, uncles, cousins, great aunts and uncles, and my grandmother while eating some of my favorite foods. After dinner, the “kids” (now 18 and up) open gifts under the mini tree we decorate for my grandmother beforehand.
Tomorrow we spend Christmas day with my dad’s (Irish/Swiss) side of the family. We always stay here, so we wake up on Christmas morning and open gifts with my dad’s sister’s family. It’s so much fun to be able to do a joint Christmas with them rather than just my family — it makes the day extra special. We enjoy a lazy morning, and then dozens of relatives and friends join us Christmas evening for a big dinner. My aunt always makes the best lasagna, and a lot of eating begins to ensue. At the end we do a gift swap which always ends up in a ton of laughter (who’s going to get the Snuggie this year?) and an unforgettable time.
My favorite part of these traditions is the fact that I spend both days with people who mean so much to me. I’m so blessed to have both sides of the family in one place! I hope everyone has a blessed and merry Christmas!
